If you are what you do, then having many irons in multiple fires is my pass into the renaissance genre. Over time, what were separate avocations have gradually overlapped, such that the product of one is influenced by the others. And, as my interests in art and technology continue to evolve, so has a learning and appreciation of how things work, and how they play together. Being a renaissance guy is a work in progress, during which I continue to hold out hope for profoundness and proficiency.

I once received an e-mail from professor and theologian Fr. Pat Manning that ended with the sign-off tag, "Everything is about something else."  These five words continue to serve as a reminder to step back and take in the big picture when I'm caught up in a detail. Replace "about" with "depends on" or "results from," and you have a perfect starting point to solve any problem that begins with "how" or "why?".

Furthermore, I've observed you can tell more about how and why something is by changing your perspective. For example, view playing a musical instrument in terms of physics and math, and you will become a better musician. Analyze a machine in terms of elegance and simplicity, and you might find ways to improve its reliability. Such an approach can help create a "renaissance mindset" that expands what you think is possible, and provides new insights on how to achieve it.

This web site shares with you examples of some of my writing, photography, and music. Many represent what I thought to be personally impossible at one time. I remain optimistic there will always be something new to be appreciated, understood, and accomplished.
